Hi, Iām Sarah.
I experiment with cyanotype to feel connected to a place I love: Antarctica. Traveling to this remote region forever changed how I observe the forces of light, water and motion. I was captivated by the hues and depths of blue in the ice that surrounded me; each piece an ever-evolving and constantly shifting work of art.
Back home in an entirely different climate and hemisphere, and throughout our changing seasons, I precariously layer common household items onto treated paper in antique photo developing trays. Set out in my backyard, I observe what happens as light, water, and motion intervene amongst the items in my tray. Compositions often transform as exposure occurs, mirroring the evolution of that same ice which captivated me. The spontaneity of how all the elements collide is my favorite part. I never tire of developing a print to see what formed, and I feel a sense of delight and connection to a place I love, from several thousand miles away.
